i always loved her finger nails...

8:37 PM

i remember she always had the nicest nails.

they weren't fancy or painted. they were fairly thin, but thick at the same time, and had a square shape to them.

they were so pretty, and i always would trace over them with my fingers when i was at her house as i would hold her hand while sitting on the couch.

"you have such pretty finger nails Grandma", I would tell her. she would giggle...

her hands were the hands of a Grandma. a woman who was always busy keeping house, baking some sort of pie, planting rhubarb out back, washing clothes, or making beds.

such soft hands....soft freckled hands she had.

touching her soft beautiful fingernails was one of the last things i did before they closed the casket.

i wanted to trace my fingers over them again...to forever etch in my memory how they felt. how her grandma hands looked.

even in death, she looked lovely.

i will miss her touch, and the way things used to be ever so much....

the most lovely lady...

[taken at my wedding 10 years ago]

{below is a re-post from September, when we thought we were going to lose her}

i don't really use this blog much for journaling. it's basically about the girls, what we do, so i don't forget, and so our family can keep up with us.

but, tonight it's about me. what i'm feeling, what's going on in my life.

my adorable, wonderful, Godly, amazing grandma is coming down with pneumonia. there was a chest x-ray done, and she has a spot on her lung.

grandma is in her final stages of Alzheimer's and has a living will where no measures are taken except to keep her comfortable and pain free. this means no medicine to fight any illnesses.

most Alzheimer's patients die from other stuff, such as pneumonia.

i remember thinking a year ago or so, "ya know, it probably won't be that difficult when grandma does pass away. i mean, she hasn't really been grandma for at least 4-5 years. i only see her once or twice a year. i bet it won't really affect me like when grandpa died."

well, not true. it sucks. Alzheimer's sucks. what this disease has done to her sucks. her not knowing my name or who i am anymore sucks, and if she could see herself where she is now, she would want to pass on too. she's a shell. Alzheimer's has robbed her of her mind and body, and she spends her days in her wheelchair doing nothing but sitting and being fed, moaning a few sounds and being changed. her life, the way it is right now, sucks. but her dying sucks too.

i feel so selfish for wanting her to fight this pneumonia. why should she? Heaven is awaiting her. what a glorious reward that will be for her. but, i don't feel ready. do you ever feel ready? i doubt it. very selfish of me. death is so final, and i just don't want to deal with the emotions of it all, and how it will affect the whole family. it sucks.

i don't want my mom to hurt anymore than she has had to these past 10+ years since grandma has been diagnosed. i don't want to watch her bury her mother that she has loved and cared for all these years. grandma is the only family member that she has right now. my brother said it best in an email to my parents (hope he doesn't mind i share)

i have been a proud son watching you two take care of your parents. you have been, and are, great examples of two common godly people...
common give you access to just about everyone....

godly makes you anything but common to affect just about everyone...

the way the nurses and caretakers talk about you, and some of the retired folks up in *****...
it seems that gma and gpa prepared you two for a life to also bring glory to God... and perhaps one of her best ministries in life was preparing you and then unknowingly inviting you to encourage, affect and provide a real christian example of loving children taking care of their elderly parent..... and in doing so... many lives have been touched....

if my grandfather was still around, he would be nothing short of amazed at how beautifully my parents have cared for grandma. they have went over and above what anyone else in their family has done. my father promised my grandpa before he passed on that grandma would be taken care of to the best of their ability, and they have kept their promise to him. what an example they have been to all those around them. i hope that if i am ever in the same situation, that i can do what they have done.

i want the people who are caring for her to know her...the real her. do they see her just as some old woman who they have to change and bathe? i want them to know how crazy and funny she was. how she loved and cared for everyone she knew. they don't know about the countless times she made a bed for me on the couch. or the fun tea parties she and i would have. or the cake she helped me make for my mom's birthday. or the black licorice that she used to love to eat. they don't know about her sunbuckles or her lefse... they just don't know her, and how incredibly special she is.

so, that is my prayer tonight. that if these are her final days, weeks, that the people surrounding her, and caring for her are showing her love. i pray that she is surrounded by nurses and doctors who are going above and beyond, because ya know what, she deserves it. i pray that Jesus is whispering in her ear, telling her either to fight because her work here is not finished, or that her home has been prepared. oh how i want her to be free of this life and what it has done to her, but i just wish we all could go with...

the end.

in the arms of her sweet Jesus

10:32 PM

my precious grandma Vicki passed away in her sleep this morning.

The timeless theme, Earth and Heaven will pass away.
It’s not a dream, God will make all things new that day.
Gone is the curse from which I stumbled and fell.
Evil is banished to eternal hell.

No more night. No more pain.
No more tears. Never crying again.
And praises to the great "I AM."
We will live in the light of the risen Lamb.

See all around, now the nations bow down to sing.
The only sound is the praises to Christ, our King.
Slowly the names from the book are read.
I know the King, so there’s no need to dread.

No more night. No more pain.
No more tears. Never crying again.
And praises to the great "I AM."
We will live in the light of the risen Lamb.

See over there, there’s a mansion, oh, that’s prepared just for me,
Where I will live with my savior eternally.

No more night. No more pain.
No more tears. Never crying again.
And praises to the great "I AM."
We will live in the light of the risen Lamb.

All praises to the great "I AM."
We’re gonna live in the light of the risen Lamb.

anyone else doing this yet?

10:10 PM

we are crazy for getting our Christmas decorations out already, but oh well! :) there is so much to do, and little by little is my motto...

on the agenda for yesterday and today were the Christmas trees! we set the girls' trees up last night, and tonight was decorating them!

the ornaments were all set out and the girls each got to take turns picking them. lots of fun was had at our house!!! i also have feather boas, but thought maybe they'd be too much for the trees?

they spent so much time planning out where each ornament went, and then would share different colored ones they knew the other liked, and they were just being so sweet to one another. Such nice moments.

And, the finished products...a decorated tree by an 8 year old and a 4 year old!! (I'm sure they will add to, adjust and take away ornaments many times until Christmas!)

i love mail!

11:15 PM

something came in the mail for these 2 little girls on Friday...

i recently did some design work for an extremely talented lady who owns an etsy store (that isn't quite up yet, but once it is, I'll update this post and put up the link to her store).

sigh...i just love getting mail....especially really pretty mail...

here's what they look like up close! (and look at those adorable hair pretties!!!)

can't wait to see them on the girls! :)

rock the vote

5:38 PM

today was election day for Avery at school as well as the rest of the country.
i was up till late making her a shirt to wear for the occasion! i thought it turned out cute! :)

and, here are our cute pumpkins that we ended up carving on saturday.
>
i thought my girls were missing out by us never carving pumpkins together, so I asked if they wanted to do it. They said yes, so we went online and searched for cute pumpkin faces to cut out. i got all the supplies ready, and we all got around the table. then, just like that, the girls left me. i spent the next 2 hours carving out these pumpkins while they played. i guess they didn't need to do this tradition after all...

trick or treating

9:02 PM

seriously, this parenting thing is so much work...especially this planning and getting all ready and dressed up for this trick or treating event. phew! by the time it was time to actually leave the house tonight, i was so tuckered out.

anyhow, the girls were Rapunzel and Little Red Riding Hood this year, thanks to costumes from Nana Dianne!

our neighborhood was a happening place to be tonight! lots of fun was had by all, and we got a chance to see lots of those we don't see that often!!! by the time we were done with all the houses, the girls were cold and tired, so it worked out great!

hoping next year to make their costumes! already planning away! :)

7th tooth, Kid of Character...

4:04 PM

on Monday night, Liv and Avery were being a little rowdy downstairs, and, how shall i say this, one of Avery's already loose teeth became even looser. It didn't hurt all that much, just bleeding, and ready to be pulled out. So, within 5 minutes, Avery was in the bathroom, and had her 7th tooth pulled out! :)

What a cinch that was! Wish they all were that easy! :) She got another letter from Twila the tooth fairy and 50 cents this time.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

today, Avery came home with the "Kid of Character" award from school. Every 2 weeks a kid from each classroom is chosen to receive the award, and this time it was Avery's turn. It's a big deal for the kids, as they get to wear a fun shirt, get a certificate, have their photo taken, and all that fun stuff! Great job Avery! We are proud of you, and your 'Citizenship'! ;)

Harvest Party, School Pictures

3:51 PM

Livie had her Preschool Harvest Party today. She got to dress all up in her Little Red Riding Hood outfit along with her other classmates! She said (and I use that term loosely) that she tried pumpkin pie and also ate lots of cupcakes too. I think they played lots of games, carved a pumpkin, and probably a lot of other loud and obnoxious preschool stuff!

She also got back her Preschool school pictures today as well! She has a cheesy smile, but oh well! at least she's smiling! Not too shabby, for $30 photos....grrrrrr.....(i know, seriously, right?)

Olivia's Birthday

4:10 PM

The whole family was up bright and early, and sang Happy Birthday to Olivia at 7:09 am, right when she turned 4. Our little baby girl is 4....

We could barely contain our excitement, as Nana Judy, Bapa Ron and Aunt Holly were going to meet us at church. The girls were soooo excited, and waited on the steps until they walked into the doors...Liv looooooooves her Aunt Holly, so she was very excited to see her!!!!

The family posed for photos after church, but no way no how am I posting faces here. Just the cute girls...i could gaze at my girls' faces all day long...........

we went out to lunch at our favorite Mexican restaurant in town! Our favorite waiter brought Olivia ice cream and wanted her to wear the sombrero, but she was too scared. She let Aunt Holly wear it instead.

There he is....Gregorio! Our bestest waiter friend!!!

Back to our house to open presents!

Meet "Eva", Liv's new friend from Nana and Bapa!

Thank you Nana and Bapa!

And, Aunt Holly bought Liv a chest of outfits for Eva...clothes, and shoes and accessories! What more could a little girl ask for?

It's always so fun to see her expressions as the paper is torn off!

Big sister Avery was ever so helpful at reading the cards to Olivia! Thanks Uncle DJ, Aunt Rachelle and Cousins Noah and Blake for the card!!! :)

And, the super yummy cake! Liv wanted a twix cake, so she got one! There is a cake in there, surrounded by twix, and topped with m & m's.

It was a huge hit, and it sure looked cute!

Oh, and what party would be complete without someones hair catching on fire? Yup, I was so busy taking pictures, I didn't help Olivia put her hair behind her ears, and it caught on fire as I was taking this last picture. Nana Judy screamed, and Aunt Holly quickly got "it" out. Liv was terrified, and wouldn't blow out the candle, but all in all, we're okay!

Happy birthday to our beautiful blue eyed baby girl! :)

Happy 4th Birthday Olivia!

12:00 AM

Oh, sweet Olivia....today we celebrate YOU! Today you are 4 years old. Our sweet baby Liv...

I wish I could put into words how much your mommy and daddy love you. We love you with an un-ending never stopping love. Isn't amazing that Jesus loves you even more?

You have blessed all of our lives with your spicy personality and spunky little self!!!

Your personality has been quite the opposite of your sister, and we have had to adjust a bit to more activity, but we wouldn't have it any other way. You are our crazy little busy baby girl, and we love you that way!

You have such a sensitive heart and are so loving to others. You love to give hugs to friends and family, and are quick to sit on others laps, when you actually do sit down :)

We love you so intensely sweet girl, and are so thankful that you are ours! Happy 4th birthday Olivia!
