I think you have every right not to celebrate Halloween and do the Santa thing if you choose. You are the parent and you have to make the right choices for your family...We do Halloween, but we dress up in "sweet, girly" attire and hang out with the neighborhood and celebrate the goodness of life and fellowship...and as for Santa...well, we talk about him ( much like Dora, Barney, Curious George,etc...who are also "not real")visit him for pictures and we aknowledge his part in the Christmas tradition as a fat, funny looking man but I don't tell her the gifts come from him...I tell her they are from Mommy and Daddy and we certainly teach her the real meaning of Christmas! Quite frankly, I could never stop reading your blog because its so open, real, and honest. As for the holidays, I tend to feel differently. And that's just because I was the daughter of the parents who didn't celebrate Halloween and I hadn't being so different from all the other kids. But again, this is about you, your family, and your convictions. What feels right for one family, may not work for another.

I thank you for being so open with this post and sharing your thoughts with us!Jenn @ Knee-Deep in Munchkin Landhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03345722021954516608noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2049030401271400332.post-89841820410416680712007-09-25T23:06:00.000-05:002007-09-25T23:06:00.000-05:00I still like ya!I be hind ya no matter what .thats...I still like ya!I be hind ya no matter what .thats what friend s are for right?Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2049030401271400332.post-79438489585101792782007-09-25T14:36:00.000-05:002007-09-25T14:36:00.000-05:00Such a tough one, and we've gone back and forth. ...Such a tough one, and we've gone back and forth. As for Halloween, something profound occured to me that made me see it in a whole new way. I realized that EVERY day of the year is the Lord's, each day is a gift, including October 31st. So we've decided to reclaim the day, it doesn't belong to Satan, it belongs to the Lord. And what an opportunity for outreach when we dress in happy, fun costumes and have carnivals at our churches, a safe place where kids can come and play games and win candy and hear the good news of Jesus Christ! By doing this, we've taken back the day, a day that Satan thought he had but that we've reclaimed. A day that we will not hide in our houses, the lights off, but a day we will answer the door with a smile and a treat and perhaps a tract on the amazing love of Christ. That's our take anyway. As for Santa, we're still really praying about this and trying to figure out what to do. I have such fond memories of Santa and stockings and the "magic" of it all, they are some of my favorite childhood memories. But it really does feel like a lie to our children, so we're trying to figure out a way to perhaps tell the story of the real man who was Saint Nick and the kindness he showed and tell them somehow that we give gifts to remember the best gift of all, Jesus Christ. I don't know, as you can tell this is still a work in progress. I certainly wouldn't want to have my children spoiling other's make-believe and magic though, and we're just not sure we want to take it away from our kids either, such a dilemma. I'd love to hear from anyone who's figured out a good way to keep Santa without taking away from Christ.
SarahSarahhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12394084012129205626noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2049030401271400332.post-70925083424647972902007-09-24T22:04:00.000-05:002007-09-24T22:04:00.000-05:00Oh, btw I forgot to say we don't do Santa either.....Oh, btw I forgot to say we don't do Santa either...and Holloween, I'm on the fence on that one. I didn't grow up with evil in Halloween - just fun dressing in costume and getting lots of candy. :) Like someone else said, we're picky with costumes, then again, I'm very picky with what they wear everyday. :)

We also do Santa. I LOVE Santa and couldn't imagine not doing it. I don't see it as lying, so much as giving them a little magic. They won't sit on his lap and I'll never force that. And I never felt betrayed as a kid when I learned the truth. It actually made me apprecite my parents more. I also love playing Santa.

But we all do our own thing and that's fine. Just make sure your tell your kids not to spill the beans to other kiddos. ;) That happened to my Sis in preschool - another kid told her there was no Santa. :)Suehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05483670069777019727noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2049030401271400332.post-55384805234801841092007-09-24T14:31:00.000-05:002007-09-24T14:31:00.000-05:00I could have written this post... we have the same...I could have written this post... we have the same views here regarding halloween and Santa Claus. I am on the fence about halloween anyway - I think dressing up is cute but I didn't do it last year and I think it's a no go for this year too - it is soo scary! I LOVE LOVE LOVE Christmas - we do a combo - we certaily have Nativity scenes and read great Christmas stories but HEY - I STILL get presents from Santa so I ain't gonna rock the boat baby! So I don't think you are weird - it will just be a little hard to skirt around the santa thing - he's everywhere!

What do you tell Avery bout that fat man in the suit???Denahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18364304214727081527noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2049030401271400332.post-22732334580303098572007-09-24T11:28:00.000-05:002007-09-24T11:28:00.000-05:00Jennisa,I agree with what most have said so far- w...Jennisa,
I agree with what most have said so far- we're all able to celebrate Holidays differently and not cast judgements on each other. We never did the Halloween thing as kids. I do let my kids dress up but I'm very picky about what they wear and it's definately my least favorite of the Holidays.
Here's to differing opinions and still loving each other!!Cherihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06350979855715095268noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2049030401271400332.post-31450039484758177252007-09-24T11:21:00.000-05:002007-09-24T11:21:00.000-05:00We feel differently, but I would say that half the...We feel differently, but I would say that half the Christians I know feel the same way as you. Everyones opinions are just different as you stated.
We however do, "do" Halloween, certainly not to celebrate the evilin it, but because, I liked getting dressed up as a kid and Landen just looks to darn cute in a costume, it's hard to resist.
Christmas, we do, again it's what Igrew up with and dont see any harm in changing it, but again, this is why people are different, we ALL do diffrent things, and we do the same things but in different ways, now i hope you dont stop reading mine! :)Kimhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07634073838237233992noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2049030401271400332.post-56680372859610774022007-09-24T09:28:00.000-05:002007-09-24T09:28:00.000-05:00You're so funny! If they do...well then, they've got issues.

We do celebrate Halloween, not to celebrate evil, but because the kids look so darn cute in their costumes!

And I do celebrate Santa. I love Christmas!! Not the presents or the commercial aspects behind it, but because of the Season itself. People are happier around that time. It's the time of year the "closet" christians if you will, come to church and celebrate. I'm not saying they should only go to church on only those religious holidays but hey, get them there when you can and hopefully, they'll enjoy it and want to come back more. Better than them not coming at all!

You confessed so I thought I'd fill you in about us a little as well!A Perfect Pandemoniumhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15170625675021468808noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2049030401271400332.post-74089563471448438692007-09-24T01:38:00.000-05:002007-09-24T01:38:00.000-05:00Thank you for changing my picture on my blogspot. ...Thank you for changing my picture on my blogspot.
